Among the Barons

Among the Barons: Book Four in the Shadow Children Sequence

I just finished Among the Barons by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Among the Barons is the fourth book in the Shadow Children series. The main characters are Lee Grant (Luke Garner), Smithfield Grant (Smits), and Mr. and Mrs. Grant. The first setting is at Hardwick School for Boys.  The second setting is Grant’s mansion.

When Luke is finally getting used to being out in a open environment at Hardwick School for Boys, Mr. Hardwick tells him that Smithfield Grant, his “little brother” which he calls Smits, is going to attend at Lee’s school with him. When he gets used to it, Mr. Hardwick tells him that now Mr. and Mrs. Grant, his “parents”, want him back at home to stay for a while. Now Luke sees that living with Barons was as dangerous as ever. Will Smits find out his secret? Or will his suspicious body guard, Oscar, discover he’s a third child with a fake identity?

Among the Barons was an awesome suspenseful read for me and will be for you. “Haddix is a superb story-teller”, says the School Library Journal. This has got to be on the “Best Books Ever” list.

Among the Barons book level would be for fourth to eighth grade boys and girls.Sophia Good-Reads would rate this book 4.5 stars!!!!!!

Among The Imposters

Among the Imposters

I just finished Among the Imposters by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This is the second book in the Shadow Children series and follows Among the Hidden. The main character is Lee Grant(Luke Garner). The setting is in The Hardwick School for boys.

Luke Garner is terrified. Out of hiding for the first time in his life, he knows that any minute one of his new classmates at Hendricks School for Boys could discover his secret that he’s a third child and has taken recently deceased Lee Grant’s name. And in a place where it’s illegal for families to have more than two children, being a third child means certain death at the hands of the Population Police.

His first experience outside the safety and comforts of his home was full of fear. There’s not a single window anywhere in the school. Luke can’t tell his classmates apart (even as they torment and bully him) and the teachers seem not to notice it  all.

Desperate to fit in, Luke endures the confusion and teasing until he discovers an unlocked door to the outside, and a chance to finally understand what is really going on. But to find out the secrets of Hendricks School for Boys, Luke will need to put aside his fears and discover a courage that a lifetime in hiding couldn’t thwart.

This book was definitely filled with constant suspense to keep you to wonder what will happen next . This book was a good follow-up book to among the hidden. This is a great pick for all readers!

The book level would be around fourth to eighth graders. Both genders will love this book. This book is so suspenseful!!! I would rate this 3.9 stars!!!!!!

Among the Hidden

Sophia Good-Reads rates Among the Hidden 4.8 stars.

Recently, I’ve read the book Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Among the Hidden is the first book in the Shadow Children series. The main characters are Luke, his Mom and Dad, and Jen. Among the Hidden takes place in a house in the middle of the forest.

Luke is the third child. All third-born children strictly forbidden by the Population Law. The only people who know of his existence are his Mom and Dad, and his two brothers, Matthew and Mark. He’s lived his whole life in hiding, so according to the government, he doesn’t exist. But when he sees a little girl in a home where he knows there are already two children, he gets curious.

Should he dare to go over to the home of the three children? Is Luke willing to risk everything, even his own life to know a simple question? Are there other third children like me? But the real question is will he get caught?

I really enjoyed Among the Hidden because it had a lot of suspense in it. It had a emotional effect on me.It makes you realize how good you’ve got it and how blessed you are. It helped me to be more thankful for everything I have and not taking my freedom for granted.

The book level of Among the Hidden is probably for fourth to seventh grade boys and girls. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that need a book of adventure, endless suspense, and curiosity, I recommend Among the Hidden! Among the Hidden is a book you just can’t put down!! I would rate this 4.8 stars!!!!
